  christopher columbus could be next on the monuments chopping block.. the 76-foot structure honoring the explorer at columbus circle should be among the statues reviewed by the city for potential purging, city council speaker melissa mark-viverito said on monday.. http://nypost.com/2017/08/21/columbus-circle-monument-could-be-next-statue-to-go/.

  if this goes on, these people are just validating what the orange one said, where will it stop?

  how will people 200 years from now look back on us?

  True. That's why we credit the founding fathers of the U.S. and the French enlightenment and the English philosophers. Great ideas matter much more than braving the Atlantic. Put Columbus where he belongs: a brave and skillful explorer, nothing more. He didn't discover anything new, nor did he contribute to our freedoms and modern values. Those freedoms and values are the legacy of great European minds, but Columbus was not among them

  It has nothing to do with Columbus being racist or not, it has to do with his contributions to advancing humanity. Columbus skill as better than average explorer/navigator should be recognized, but that's it. He made no contributions to make the world a better place. Instead he opened the door to the destruction and exploitation of humans by other humans. Not necessarily his fault.

  Columbus merit is the same as that of many other brave explorers of whom most people never heard.

  Why not? He didn't discover America. Did he? Wasn't there a bunch of Indians here already? Wasn't there some viking here in America before Columbus?

  Just like changing religion or any other tradition, as our values and knowledge change, we have to review our list of heroes.

  I am all for getting rid of Columbus as a hero or someone who should be memorialized? If the white supremacists or Eurocentric people want to keep, let's go at it. Make your case, using our current values and knowledge.

  back in 1947, the republican party was the "liberal" party.. i was reading an awake from 1947 and found out that jw's were not really neutral at all!

  they clearly supported american democracy and rejected fascism and communism!their twist was that, of course, the catholic church and the protestants were in bed with the nazis, and if just the german people were allowed to be jehovah's witnesses, they would also embrace freedom and reject nazism.i am not making this up.. apparently the german people could not think right in 1947... that's why they did not want american freedom and democracy... where jw's would be free to preach!what?.

  Republicans liberals??? You are kidding me. They proudly call themselves conservative. Conservatism and liberalism are by definition in different sides of the philosophical and political aisle. They, Republicans, just want to appropriate beautiful words, not unlike the guys at the extreme left. The people who best represent liberalism sit somewhere in the middle, moderates.   Back to the main point. ESPN is reacting to crazies, who in principle may be right, but their conduct is extreme. ESPN needs to protect its employees and its name from idiots who can't make distinctions. It's a business decision. Times change. Just sit down and watch the show with the comfort that most of us are not part of radicals in the right or the left. And yes, it's the moderates who hold the power, but have to please loonies on both sides from time to time. It's politics as usual, with a moral compass always moving in the direction where the "magnetic field" is stronger". You may be part of a passing generation.

  Last time I checked, general Lee fought to preserve slavery. Great general and a man of courage and integrity, but he defended slavery. Time to make corrections to misguided traditions, just as we do with religion. Maybe the "Marxists" got it right. I am willing to listen to a cogent argument to defend memorializing pro-slavery figures, if there is one.

  Oh this stoopid shunning thing!!

  warning - vent ahead....... so, my father (still very much in jw but who has at least had the decency to still keep in contact with me and hubby and to show interest in why we aren't attending and respect where we are at) is in intensive care at a local hospital and is intubated and sedated with some serious health issues.

  i'm next of kin so i get all the phone calls from the hospital.. so, the rest of the "family" has cut me off because we are inactive and because the ever-active jw gossip grapevine has rumoured with a sibilant slithy hissy voice: "apossstassssy" is the cause of our inactivity.. whatever.. but now i've had to contact said "family" with the news about my father and what is going on....... so, dad's sisters answer my calls and manage to act and conduct themselves with a degree of decorum.. my sister on the other hand - well, she doesn't deign to answer my calls and texts for most of the day.

  i push the issue tonight and insist on speaking to her when my brother-in-law answers the call.

  Interesting that I can openly attack the organization in the harshest way possible, and what do I get in return... my brothers, my daughter and my wife, all JW's, become nicer. I am not exaggerating. It's the common pattern of my JW family who have had access to my rants about the Borg. That's the difference between being baptized and not being baptized. Also, being the financial support of all of them (my brothers work for/with me) may have something to do with their smiles and nice words after my rants about the Watchtower.

  The cult steals their minds and turns them into marionettes, who can be kind or angry when the handler sees fit.

  just curious but how do the people off this forum find reddit.

  for myself i find reddit to be sadly lacking in the jw world.

  i just don't find the depth there e.g one sentence replies, trying to be funny.
